With a population of around 350,000, this large city in the south of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia is one of the largest in Germany. The former capital of the Federal Republic of Germany looks back on more than 2,000 years of history dating back to Germanic and Roman settlements.
From 1597 to 1794, Bonn was the capital and residence of the Electorate of Cologne. The city is also the birthplace of the world-famous composer Ludwig van Beethoven.
In 1948, the Parliamentary Council also met in Bonn and drafted the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany. After reunification in 1990, the Berlin/Bonn Act was passed and the seat of government was moved from Bonn to Berlin.
