Cologne - from Roman settlement to a modern metropolis
Cologne - Latin Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium - is an independent city in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Cologne is also the most populous city in the state with about 1.1 million inhabitants. The city is best known for Cologne Cathedral and its Romanesque churches.
Cologne is also rich in an eventful history. The city's history dates back more than 2,000 years and spans the period from Roman settlement, through the Middle Ages, to modern times. In its past, Cologne's favorable location on the Rhine made it an important trading city.
